HomeCase StudiesLeading Cornish Web Development Agency enters Big Data Market
Altcom Ltd is an award-winning web and app software development agency with its HQ in Penzance, and staff in London, Glasgow and Manchester. Established in 1995 it delivers web platforms, mobile apps and advanced bespoke software solutions to clients such as the Scotrail and Greater Anglia rail franchises, the Chevron oil company and the University of Falmouth.
The company has had ISO9001:2015 certification for “software design, development and licensing” since 2006. They also have a strong background in processing and analysing data for the hydrocarbon and geothermal industries. The business came to Superfast Business Cornwall when they were planning to further develop their “Big Data” products and services. Big Data involves using advanced software and powerful computers to interrogate huge and complex databases of information to support better decision making.
Superfast Business Cornwall Digital Business Enabler Mike Robertson, met with Director Dr Andrew Jupe, to explore their opportunities and map out their project plans.
Andrew explains:
“We plan to develop a framework for capturing information from “Big Data” sources and delivering it efficiently and cheaply to mobile devices using web push-notification technology. For example when a user submits a request via a mobile APP to monitor a time-varying event, such as the progress of a train. The query may be unique to the user or common to a large number of users. Our technology will monitor the available “Big Data” sources, extract and process the relevant information and deliver it via an APP to the user’s mobile device. Our outcome will be a product that can be sold as an addition to existing web projects and licensed into a wide range of service industries (eg rail franchises).”
Superfast Business Cornwall provided part funding to Altcom’s “Big Data” software development and Mike was on hand to help with project management.
Mike said:
“Altcom is a good example of a company looking ahead and growing their business by developing software tools that will compliment current products and services and also provide opportunities to reach new clients. It’s been a pleasure working with them and seeing the software develop.”
As a result of this project the company has already recruited three skilled software developers and, as the project continues, anticipate needing to employ up to another three roles.
Andrew adds:
“We expect this aspect of our business will contribute significantly to our annual turnover over the next few years. We have already received interest from one of the rail operating companies. I have to thank Mike and the team at Superfast Business Cornwall because without their support our “Big Data” project would not be in the advanced position it is in now.”
